New York is the most talented city in the world, according to our Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2020. London took second place and Singapore third. What makes these places so attractive to workers and are they ready for the Future of Work?

A different workforce will be needed in the future as automation, machine learning and AI tech start to reach all corners of the employment market. As well as a places ability to grow, attract and retain talent, this year’s GTCI report took into account a city’s affinity for new tech to measure how prepared they are for the changing digital work environment.

These are the top 10 cities most prepared for the Fourth Industrial revolution:

US cities filled the top rankings due to the high prevalence of training in their firms and the opportunities offered to employees for development. This devotion to lifelong learning was clearly reflected in the city rankings as the US bagged 4 of the top 10 spots for talent competitiveness.

New York – the trend setter

The Big Apple moves fast. It is not a place that follows trends but sets them. The vibrant city is full of early-adopters and home to multiple industries. This amalgamation breeds new ideas, accounting for the high number of startups in the region. A wealth of financing options and a world-class technical infrastructure make it an easy place to start a business and provides a steady home for large, long-standing companies.

London is a truly global city. With around 3 million of its 10 million inhabitants coming from outside the UK it is a hotbed for diversity and talent. The UK capital is renowned for its innovation and large financial industry as well as its dynamic and strong economy. Singapore’s education system is among the best in the world. The Asia Pacific city is wholeheartedly embracing technology, hence its 3rd place in our rankings. Boston took 5th place in our GTCI rankings and is also winning at attracting and retaining talent. This forward-thinking city is becoming the place in the US for technology research, something its strong economy relies on. This is largely thanks to its impressive education institutions, Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT and Harvard. These academic heavyweights have attracted specialised industries to the region as well as a highly-skilled workforce.
