Swiss Skills Shortage Index 2022

After easing in the past two years (2020 and 2021) owing to the coronavirus crisis, the shortage of skilled workers in Switzerland is now escalating dramatically. The Skills Shortage Index is currently at an all-time high. As a result, recruiting new staff is becoming a serious challenge for companies. In particular, jobs for health specialists, IT experts and technical engineers are currently proving very difficult to fill.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on the Swiss job market over the last two years. Marcel Keller, Country Head Adecco Switzerland, gives his opinion on the current situation: ‘The coronavirus pandemic has been a rollercoaster ride for the Swiss job market. While demand for skilled workers initially reached an all-time low last year, it skyrocketed this year to an unprecedented level. Demographic change is being strongly influenced by the progressive retirement of the baby boomers. But growing global uncertainties, the call for shorter supply chains and the unsettled global political situation also continue to pose a challenge for companies. Demand for qualified professionals will therefore continue to rise, with the result that rather than companies selecting their employees, it will increasingly be the other way around.’
